The crash happened in South Windsor on westbound I-291 near the Exit 4 on-ramp at about 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, Connecticut State Police said.

Jose Cotto, of Windsor Locks, was riding a 2017 Harley-Davidson XL 1200 Forty-Eight when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the motorcycle and it tipped over, causing Cotto to be separated from the motorcycle, police said.

Authorities said a 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid then struck Cotto and then struck the Harley-Davidson in the left lane of travel.

Police said Cotto collided with the driver's side of a 2020 Ford Explorer, which was parked on the right shoulder.

Cotto was taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, and he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

The driver of the Honda, a 20-year-old Hartford man, and the three passengers in the Honda were hospitalized with minor injuries, police said.

Authorities reported that the driver of the Ford, a 29-year-old Middletown man, told police he was not injured and refused medical treatment at the scene.

The Harley-Davidson and the Honda were towed from the scene with disabling damage, and the Ford sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene, police said.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Police asked any witnesses to call Trooper Michael Dean at 860-534-1098 or email him at michael.dean@ct.gov.
